Da Nang has three temples with the same name Linh Ung, but Linh Ung Ba Na is less commonly referred to despite being very peaceful. Located at an altitude of nearly 1,500 m on Mount Chua, this temple is shrouded in mist every morning, standing silently amidst the pine forest and only revealing its golden roof when the wind blows the clouds away.
Walking through the green stone gate, visitors will encounter a 27 m tall statue of Buddha Shakyamuni sitting quietly, looking out over the Nam Thien Garden valley and the distant cable car peaks. The main hall of the temple is built of lim wood, left unpainted to showcase the dark brown wood grain – a rare style in mainland temples. Two corridors on either side have statues of Arhats made of sandstone carved in Tibetan style, each with a different, very vivid expression.
The most beautiful moment is perhaps at sunset. When the golden light pierces through the clouds, the Buddha statue glows as if coated in a layer of gold, and if you're lucky enough to stand in the right direction, you will see a sea of clouds stretching beneath the statue's feet. This phenomenon of “clouds covering the Buddha's feet” has caused many photographers to climb Ba Na dozens of times to capture a shot.
Tip: a Sun World Ba Na all-inclusive ticket costs about 900,000 VND/adult, which includes the cable car and temple visit. From the L’Indochine station, it is a 5-minute walk to the temple. It is advisable to wear flat shoes and a light jacket as the temperature on Ba Na is 6–8 °C lower than in the center. The best prayer times are at 6:30 AM or 4 PM when there are fewer visitors. After visiting, sit down on the stone bench to the left of the temple – admire the valley and listen to the temple bells ringing in the wind, and you will understand why Ba Na has long been likened to the “meditation place in the clouds” of Da Nang.
