🦑 Tamarind Dried Squid in Quang Tri is a dish that looks small and simple… but is very easy to eat endlessly.
Just opening the jar, you can immediately smell the light sour tamarind mixed with the distinctive aroma of dried squid.
The squid is dried just enough so it’s not too dry, still retains a slight chewiness. The tamarind sauce clings evenly to the outside, with a balanced sour, spicy, and sweet taste that is quite palatable.
🌶️ What I like about the dried squid from Quang Tri is that the spiciness is not too harsh but is very “sticky” to eat.
At first, I only thought of trying a few pieces for fun, but the more I ate, the more I found it captivating because of the rich and lingering aftertaste. This dish is suitable for eating while chatting, on long trips, or enjoying in the evening.
🌊 Once, I bought a jar of dried squid near Cua Viet beach, sitting right by the embankment in the late afternoon, eating while listening to the sound of the waves.
The sea atmosphere combined with the spicy tamarind flavor creates a very special feeling. It’s also the kind of dish that makes people remember Quang Tri in a very ordinary way, not something too elaborate.
🔥 Many places here still dry squid manually, so each batch will have slightly different intensity.
The maker has to control the fire quite carefully so that the squid doesn’t become tough and the sauce is sticky enough to coat each strand evenly. It’s this slow and careful method that preserves its unique flavor.
📍 If you visit Quang Tri and are looking for a dish that is both easy to eat and convenient to buy as a gift, Tamarind Dried Squid is definitely worth trying.
There’s just one small “problem” that often before you can bring it home, the jar of squid is nearly empty already 😅
