Trùng Khánh chestnuts are uniform, with dark brown shells, light white fur, and yellow flesh. The most common way to eat chestnuts is to boil them until soft, roast them over hot coals, or fry them in a pan; they have a delicious and rich flavor when eaten. Additionally, they can be used to make dishes like pork knuckles and bone broth with chestnuts, which are good for health. During the chestnut season, before each market day, traders will go to each garden to buy them to sell at the district and provincial markets.
Note that you need to distinguish Cao Bang chestnuts from Chinese chestnuts. Cao Bang chestnuts are more expensive, priced at 150,000 – 200,000 VND/kg, twice the price of Chinese chestnuts. Additionally, Chinese chestnuts are sold year-round, are larger, round, have no fur on the outside, and the inside is white.
Trùng Khánh chestnuts have high economic value, chosen by consumers at competitive prices, but the supply does not meet market demand.
In recent years, Chinese chestnuts have borrowed the Trùng Khánh chestnut brand, with consumption in Cao Bang reaching hundreds of tons. Because Chinese chestnuts are cheaper compared to Trùng Khánh chestnuts, with a larger quantity to meet market demand. When buying, you need to carefully distinguish to purchase the correct type of Trùng Khánh chestnuts, and you can even go to the garden to experience picking chestnuts in the autumn.
