🎲 The craft of making Huế traditional dice – Preserving the soul of an ancient game

Amidst the modern life flowing every day, there is still a small corner in Huế that quietly preserves old memories with diligent hands. That is Mr. Đặng Văn Tố – a person who has been attached to the craft of making traditional dice for nearly 50 years, and is almost the only artisan still fully pursuing this special craft.

In a small house in Hương Sơ (Hương An ward), time seems to slow down. There are no noisy machines, only the smell of dried bones, the scent of old wood, and the yellow light casting down on the table that has accompanied him through many years. Every day, he still begins with familiar tasks: selecting bones – smoothing them – carving letters. The slow, precise, repetitive actions… like a way of life.

For him, traditional dice are not just a means of livelihood. They are a part of the old Huế life – a rustic, delicate memory full of flavor, preserved with patience and love for the craft.

There are legacies that are not found in museums; they reside in the hands of those who quietly keep the fire alive.
