Thuy Xuan Incense Village - 700 Years of Fragrance in the Heart of the Ancient Capital of Hue

Amidst the solemn and ancient beauty of Hue, there is a place so vibrant that just stepping in makes your heart light up. That is Thuy Xuan Incense Village – a traditional craft village over 700 years old, where the fragrant incense blends with colors, and where the rhythm of old life still flows persistently amidst modern times.

Thuy Xuan Incense Village is not just a tourist attraction. It tells the story of spiritual life, of the hands of Hue artisans, and of a living heritage that continues to be preserved day by day.

1. Where is Thuy Xuan Incense Village?

Thuy Xuan Incense Village is located on Huyen Tran Cong Chua Street, about 7km southwest of Hue city center. The village's location is very convenient for combining visits to famous sites such as Tu Duc Tomb, Vong Canh Hill, or the tombs along the western axis of the city.

Just a morning or an afternoon is enough for you to visit the village, leisurely stroll, take photos, and bring back very Hue experiences.

2. The 700-year mark of a Hue craft village

According to elderly artisans, the incense-making craft in Thuy Xuan has existed for about 700 years, forming and developing strongly during the Nguyen Dynasty. In the past, this was the source of incense for the royal court, local officials, and the people of Thuan Hoa - Phu Xuan.

Through many upheavals, the craft village has been preserved through the form of passing down from father to son. Each generation continues to learn the craft, maintaining it, so that the pure incense fragrance not only appears during festivals and Tet but also becomes an indispensable part of the spiritual life of the people of Hue.

3. What makes the "soul" of Thuy Xuan incense?

Thuy Xuan incense is loved for its light, delicate fragrance, not harsh, and especially for not using chemicals. Each incense stick is the result of meticulousness and experience accumulated over generations.

The main ingredients are natural agarwood, combined with cinnamon, star anise, cloves, cardamom, and pine buds… according to each family's specific ratio. In addition, artisans also use wild grapefruit peel, dried grapefruit flowers, cinnamon, and eucalyptus to complete the final layer of fragrance – a scent very Hue: fragrant yet not heavy, aromatic yet not overwhelming.

The core of the incense is made from aged bamboo, cut into small pieces and sun-dried for many days. This method helps the incense burn evenly, straight, and not extinguish halfway – something that Vietnamese people particularly avoid in spiritual life.

Initially, traditional incense only had brown and red colors. Later, to serve tourism and aesthetics, the locals created additional colors like yellow, green, purple, and pink, creating a vibrant scene like a giant flower garden in the village.

4. Unmissable experiences at Thuy Xuan Incense Village

4.1 Check-in in the vibrant "incense flower garden"

Under the gentle Hue sun, bundles of incense are arranged in a circular spread, blooming like colorful flowers. Just standing there guarantees beautiful photos – from portraits, group photos to very "artistic" frames. This is one of the most photogenic check-in spots in Hue.

4.3 Strolling through the incense village and buying Hue-scented souvenirs

Besides incense, the village also sells many handicrafts and souvenirs: paper fans, brocade items, paintings, keychains, products featuring the ancient capital's motifs. These are small yet meaningful gifts, perfect to bring back after a trip to Hue.

Thuy Xuan Incense Village is not only beautiful for photos but also rich in cultural depth and the resilience of an ancient craft village. Amidst the slow pace of the ancient capital, the incense fragrance here quietly spreads, reminding people of tranquility and the values preserved through generations.

If you have the chance to visit Hue, take some time to stop by Thuy Xuan – to admire the colors, hear the stories of the craft, and bring back a very Hue fragrance, a scent that lingers longer than any photo.
