Explore Ma Pi Leng Pass – A masterpiece of nature in the rocky highlands of Ha Giang

Ma Pi Leng Pass is known as one of the “four great mountain passes” of Vietnam, located on the route connecting Dong Van and Meo Vac. 1. Overview and landscape value

Located at an altitude of about 1,500 meters above sea level, the pass is nearly 20 km long, winding around the limestone mountain slopes. This route is part of the Dong Van Stone Plateau – an area recognized by UNESCO as a global geopark.

The name “Ma Pi Leng” in H'Mong means “horse's nose,” reflecting the steep and sharp terrain characteristic. The construction was carried out from 1959 to 1965, with the participation of thousands of workers, carrying historical value and significance for the development of transportation in the highlands.

From the top of the pass, visitors can observe the entire valley with overlapping mountain ranges and the Nho Que River flowing below, creating a characteristic natural picture of Ha Giang.

2. Suitable time for visiting

The time from October to April of the following year is considered favorable for traveling and sightseeing due to dry weather, limiting rain and landslides.

  • October: The rice harvest season on terraced fields
  • November–December: Buckwheat flowers bloom
  • January–March: Peach and plum flowers appear
  • April: The Khau Vai Love Market takes place

Each time brings a different landscape characteristic, suitable for various experience needs.

3. Outstanding experiences at Ma Pi Leng

  • 3.1. Observing the panorama from the top of the pass

The stopping points along the pass allow clear observation of the rocky terrain structure and deep valleys. This is a basic experience but provides an overall view of the area.

  • 3.2. Check-in at natural rock outcrops

Some locations have rock outcrops protruding from the mountain slopes, creating natural observation points. This area is suitable for photography, but safety should be considered when moving.

  • 3.3. Stopping at coffee shops on the pass

The resting spots and coffee shops along the pass route help visitors relax while enjoying the mountainous landscape in an open space.

3.4. Exploring Tu San Gorge and Nho Que River

The journey would not be complete without visiting the Tu San Gorge area. Visitors can move down to the boat dock to experience the Nho Que River.

Traveling by boat allows direct observation of the steep cliffs and characteristic geological structures, providing a more vivid experience compared to viewing from above.
