Mèo Vạc Sinkhole – "Sky Well" Awakens in the Ha Giang Stone Highlands

Meo Vac Sinkhole – The "Sky Well" Awakens in the Ha Giang Stone Plateau

If Ha Giang is likened to an outdoor geological museum, then the Meo Vac Sinkhole is a “living artifact” full of mystery. Amidst the dry cat-ear stone mountain ranges, the sinkhole unexpectedly opens up a deep space, where sunlight falls straight down to the earth, creating a scene that is both majestic and surreal – truly a “sky well” of the stone plateau.

Not noisy, not easily accessible, the Meo Vac Sinkhole attracts travelers with its pristine nature and a very real sense of exploration.

1. Where is the Meo Vac Sinkhole?

The sinkhole is located in Tia Chi Dua village, Giang Chu Phin commune, Meo Vac district, about 2km from the center of Meo Vac town.

Hidden on a hill covered with green pines, it is very difficult to recognize the existence of this “wonder” from the outside. Only when approaching does the mouth of the sinkhole suddenly open up before your eyes, creating an overwhelming feeling – as if the ground has just split open to reveal another world below.

2. The “Sky Well” in the Heart of Stone – A Unique Beauty

The Meo Vac Sinkhole has a giant funnel shape, with a diameter of about 200m and a depth of approximately 30–40m. The walls of the sinkhole are vertical cat-ear stone slabs, cold gray, completely contrasting with the lush greenery growing inside.

What makes the sinkhole's unique beauty is the light. During the day, sunlight from above filters through the tree canopy, shining directly down to the bottom of the sinkhole, creating interwoven light and shadow like a natural stage. At each moment of the day, the “sky well” takes on a different appearance:

  • Morning: gentle sunlight, a clear space
  • Noon: the sinkhole reveals every geological detail
  • Late afternoon: slanted light creates a mysterious depth

Standing at the mouth of the sinkhole, one feels both small and curious – as if looking into the heart of the Dong Van stone plateau.

3. Memorable Experiences at the Meo Vac Sinkhole

3.1 Admiring a Rare Geological Wonder

The sinkhole is the result of a karstification process that has lasted millions of years – when groundwater erodes limestone, creating voids that eventually collapse. This makes the Meo Vac Sinkhole a valuable geological research site of the Dong Van stone plateau.

3.2 Exploring the “Hidden” Ecosystem Underground

Inside the sinkhole is a mini-ecosystem: plants, weeds, and even birds living separately from the outside world. If you have experience and safety equipment, you can follow the path down to explore the bottom of the sinkhole, breathing in the rare, cool, pristine atmosphere.

3.3 Hunting for Unique and Uncommon Photos

For photography enthusiasts, the Meo Vac Sinkhole is a hard-to-find “background.” Just standing at the right angle, the light from above combined with the stone walls and the green carpet below will create adventurous, distinctive photos that are completely different from familiar check-in spots.

3.4 Combining Exploration in Meo Vac

From the sinkhole, you can easily combine visits to:

  • Ma Pi Leng Pass – one of the four great mountain passes
  • Nho Que River – the emerald river in the Tu San gorge
  • Khau Vai Love Market – a unique cultural feature of the highlands

A day in Meo Vac will be more complete when interspersed with landscapes – culture – geology.

4. Notes When Exploring the Sinkhole

  • Do not approach the edge of the sinkhole too closely, especially when it rains
  • If going down to the bottom of the sinkhole, a guide and safety equipment are necessary
  • Preserve the landscape, do not litter, do not break branches
  • The best time: dry season, morning or early afternoon

The Meo Vac Sinkhole is not a destination for the hurried masses. It is a place to stand still, look down into the earth, and realize that nature in Ha Giang still holds countless untold secrets.

If you are used to the mountain passes, the rivers, and want to find a new – deep – different experience, come to the “sky well” of Meo Vac. Who knows, in that deep space, you might find a very different side of yourself.
