Nam Cat Lake – The newly emerging green gem of eco-tourism in Bac Kan.

The lake in the vast green wilderness of Bac Kan city

Located in Duong Quang commune, Bac Kan city, Nam Cat lake is gradually becoming one of the destinations that many tourists are interested in when mentioning the ecological tourism of Bac Kan province. Not only is it the largest irrigation work in the province, but the lake also boasts impressive natural landscapes with its vast water surface nestled among the towering mountain ranges and endless green forests.

In the Tay language, “Nam Cat” means “cold water lake.” With a water surface area of over 87ha and a storage capacity of about 12 million m³ of water, this place is likened to a “huge green mirror” amidst the Northeast mountains and forests.

Attractive pristine scenery

The special feature that makes Nam Cat lake attractive is the natural scenery that still retains its pristine characteristics. The lake is nestled in a vast valley, surrounded by mountain ranges with heights ranging from over 100m to about 600m above sea level. From above, the emerald green lake winds through the forests and mountains, creating a scene that is both majestic and poetic.

Surrounding the lake are ecological forests, protective forests, and agricultural cultivation areas along the lake, creating a diverse and vibrant natural picture. In the early mornings, the mist lightly covers the water surface, making the scenery here even more peaceful and captivating.

Space for experiencing local culture

Not only possessing beautiful landscapes, the Nam Cat lake area is also home to the Tay, Dao, and Nung ethnic communities with many distinctive cultural features. Traditional stilt houses line the lake, and the melodies of Then, Sli, and Luon along with folk festivals are still preserved, becoming attractive highlights for tourists who love to experience local culture.

In the future, this area is oriented to develop community tourism models, homestays, and experiences of local people's lives, contributing to providing closer and more authentic exploration journeys.

Potential to become a major ecological tourism area in Bac Kan

Currently, Bac Kan province is promoting the planning and investment to develop Nam Cat lake into a provincial-level ecological tourism area. The planned area covers about 1,675ha with various types of tourism such as relaxation, ecological experiences under the forest canopy, community tourism, entertainment, spiritual tourism, and outdoor activities.

According to the development orientation, Nam Cat lake will form lakeside resorts, culinary villages, ecological experience areas, picnic areas, boat docks, and many other tourism facilities to create an attractive destination for both domestic and international tourists.

An ideal destination for relaxation and picnics

With its vast space, fresh climate, and distinctive natural landscapes, Nam Cat lake is very suitable for weekend relaxation activities, camping, boating, sightseeing, or simply seeking peace amidst nature.

Unlike crowded tourist spots, Nam Cat lake offers a relaxed feeling with the pristine beauty of the Viet Bac mountains and forests. This is an ideal place for those who love to explore nature, capture scenic photographs, or seek a resting space away from the urban pace of life.

Nam Cat Lake – A new highlight on the Bac Kan tourism map

Thanks to its location on important connecting routes such as the Bac Kan city – Ba Be lake axis and the Hanoi – Bac Kan – Cao Bang expressway in the future, Nam Cat lake possesses many advantages for regional tourism development.

The combination of the lake's landscape, mountains, local culture, and ecological tourism development orientations is opening up opportunities for Nam Cat lake to become one of the most prominent destinations in Bac Kan in the near future.

If Ba Be lake is the famous tourism symbol of the province, then Nam Cat lake is expected to become a new “green gem,” contributing to the continuous development of Bac Kan tourism and attracting tourists from near and far.
