Hang Tám Cô: A Spiritual Tourism Destination in Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng

1. "Fire Coordinates" and the Heartbreaking Call from the Mountain Rock

  • Do not look at the peaceful green of Quang Binh and Quang Tri mountains today and think that this place has never tasted hardship. During the years of war, this Route 20 was a "fire pan" in the true sense, where American bombs fell to cut off the lifeblood of support.
  • On a fateful afternoon in 1972, when the young volunteers, just eighteen or twenty years old, were filling in bomb craters, planes suddenly appeared. They ran into a cave for shelter, but a rock weighing over 100 tons collapsed, sealing the cave's entrance. The comrades outside clearly heard the cries of "Mom, save me!" echoing out, but human strength and shovels could not move the gigantic rock. For nine days and nights, the cries grew weaker and then ceased altogether. That pain, those who remained carried with them for a lifetime.

2. The Truth About the Name and the Late Offering of Incense

  • Many people often wonder: "Why is it called Hang Tam Co, when those who sacrificed there included both men and women?". In fact, this place was originally a post of a squad of eight girls.
  • This endearing name was passed down among the soldiers as a way to honor the feminine presence in the sacred forest. When eight young volunteers from Hoang Hoa (Thanh Hoa) sacrificed their lives, their comrades kept the old name as a way to gather all the youth of those who fell into a common legend.
  • It wasn't until 2025, during a restoration, that the remains and simple belongings of the brothers and sisters were found. A return after more than half a century! The shared grave is now built with stones brought from their homeland Thanh Hoa, Ninh Binh, so that the brothers and sisters can lie next to each other, warm like the days spent together in the trenches.

3. Don't Just Pass By, Stop and Listen

  • If
you are planning a trip back to your roots or simply want to find a place to calm your heart, visit Hang Tam Co. It is not just a simple tour, but a pilgrimage of gratitude.
  • Here’s a piece of advice: When standing at the cave's entrance or by the shared grave, take a moment of silence. You will find that the "stillness" of the ancient forest is not frightening, but rather majestic and sacred. Light an incense stick, tell the brothers and sisters about a peaceful Vietnam today, and remind yourself of the value of the peace we have.
