Huyen Khong Cave - When the light of stone touches the soul amidst the Marble Mountains

Amidst the tranquil limestone mountain range of the Marble Mountains, there is a space where just stepping in makes your natural breathing slow down. Huyen Khong Cave is not noisy, not ostentatious, but it leaves people silent with its beauty that is both sacred and mystical – a place where stone, light, and faith harmonize.

Not merely a cave, Huyen Khong is a rare quiet space in the bustling coastal city of Da Nang.

1. Huyen Khong Cave – A gem exposed on the peak of Thuy Son

Huyen Khong Cave is located on the peak of Thuong Thai, belonging to the Thuy Son mountain – the largest and most beautiful mountain in the Marble Mountains. The special feature of the cave is its semi-open space: a flat floor, a high arch, and many natural skylights above.

This structure allows sunlight to shine down into the cave at different times of the day, creating interwoven light and shadow, making the space seem to change continuously. At times, the cave is radiant like a stage, at other times, it is quiet like a meditation room in the mountains.

On sunny days, Huyen Khong is cool and airy like a “natural air conditioner” – very pleasant even though it is scorching outside.

2. A deep spiritual space within the stone

Unlike other caves that are merely for sightseeing, Huyen Khong Cave is a living space of worship. Inside the cave, there are many worship structures, Buddha statues, and temples that have been preserved by the local people for a long time.

Most prominent is the stone statue of Buddha Shakyamuni carved by artisan Nguyen Chat, placed in the center – where light shines directly from above, creating a solemn and tranquil feeling. Below is the altar of Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha – symbolizing compassion and salvation.

On either side of the cave are worship spaces for Lady Chua Tien (Ngoc Phi), Lady Chua Thuong Ngan – folk beliefs associated with the mountains and forests and protection. Moving deeper to the right is Trang Nghiem Tu, worshiping Avalokiteshvara and saints like Quan Cong, Quan Binh, Chau Xuong; there is also a shrine for Mr. To – Mrs. Nguyet, where many people come to pray for love.

All of this creates a Huyen Khong that is both Buddhist and folk belief, very close and emotionally accessible.

3. Historical marks hidden within the cave

Few people know that, besides its scenic and spiritual values, Huyen Khong Cave also carries memories of war. During the resistance against the French and Americans, this place was once:

  • A secret base for guerrillas
  • A first aid station for the wounded
  • A safe shelter amidst bombs and bullets

The rock walls that once sheltered people during turmoil now open up a peaceful space for visitors. This contrast makes Huyen Khong not only beautiful but also rich in historical depth.

4. Huyen Khong Cave – “Paradise of light” for photography enthusiasts

Although it is a cave, Huyen Khong is very photogenic. Thanks to the natural light shining from above, you can capture:

  • Panoramic photos with sunlight streaming through the arch
  • Portraits of light – contrasting shadows
  • Architectural photos of stone and Buddha statues in a serene space

Tip: The best time to take photos is from 9 AM to 11 AM, when the light enters the cave clearly and softly.

5.3 Notes

  • Dress respectfully and modestly as it is a spiritual space
  • Walk softly, speak quietly, do not touch the statues – artifacts
  • Wear shoes with good grip due to the stone floor

Huyen Khong Cave is not a destination to rush through, but a place to pause. Pause to look up at the light falling through the stone arch, pause to listen to the wind, the sound of footsteps echoing softly in the cave. And pause to see that, amidst a bustling Da Nang, there are still spaces reserved for tranquility.

If your journey from Da Nang to Hoi An needs a peaceful, profound, and meaningful stop, let Huyen Khong be the place you visit – not just to admire, but to feel.
