Phu Thong Fort – a historical site that marks the resilient spirit of the Vietnamese military and people.
Where is Phu Thong Station?
Phu Thong Station is a historical site located in Phu Thong town, Bach Thong district, the old Bac Kan province. The site is about 18km north of the center of Bac Kan city, quite convenient for tourists to travel by car or motorbike in their journey to explore historical and cultural destinations in the Viet Bac region.

Not only is it an old military structure, Phu Thong Station is also a place that marks fierce battles in the resistance against French colonialism. This place is associated with the patriotic spirit, persistent fighting will, and the sacrifices of our military and people in the early years of the resistance.
Strategic location of Phu Thong Station
Phu Thong Station has a particularly important location as it is near the intersection of National Highway 3 and Route 258. This is a favorable position to control traffic, block vital routes, and dominate the Viet Bac area – an important base of the Vietnamese revolution in the resistance against the French.
Because of its strategic location, the French colonists built Phu Thong Station into a solid military base. Their goal was to control the road to Bac Kan, prevent the activities of the resistance forces, and exert pressure on the Viet Bac base. However, this place also became a hot spot of conflict, where our army organized attacks multiple times, inflicting significant losses on the enemy and gaining valuable experiences in the art of siege warfare.

The imprint of Phu Thong Station in the resistance against the French
During the period of 1947 – 1948, Phu Thong Station was the site of many important battles between the Vietnamese army and the French colonists. After the French troops parachuted into Bac Kan in October 1947 and occupied this area, the station became one of the important military bases of the enemy in the Viet Bac region.
Our army organized many attacks on Phu Thong Station with the participation of main force units, local troops, and militia. Although the battles did not achieve complete victory, they inflicted significant losses on the French, weakened the enemy's defensive strength, and boosted the fighting spirit of our military and people.
In particular, the battles at Phu Thong Station helped our troops accumulate a lot of experience in organizing attacks on fortified positions. Those lessons later became an important foundation for our army to continue perfecting tactics, contributing to significant victories in the resistance against the French, culminating in the victory at Dien Bien Phu in 1954.
Military architecture of Phu Thong Station
Phu Thong Station was built as a solid defensive outpost. The structure has a thick earthen wall system, bunkers, a gate, and loopholes for observation, defense, and countering attacks from outside.
When visiting the site, tourists can see the remaining traces of the old military structure. The thick walls, corners of the station, and defensive layout all somewhat reflect the brutality of war. Each detail here not only carries military architectural value but also serves as a vivid testament to a period of arduous struggle of the nation.
The space at Phu Thong Station has a solemn, ancient beauty. Standing in the middle of the historical site, visitors can somewhat imagine the fierce fighting days of our troops, where every meter of land, every bunker was a battleground between the will for independence and the military strength of the French colonists.

Historical value of Phu Thong Station
Phu Thong Station is one of the historical sites of great significance in Bac Kan. This place not only marks the attacks on the station by our army but also reflects the resilient fighting spirit, ingenuity, and deep patriotism of the Vietnamese people in the resistance against the French.
The battles at Phu Thong Station show that despite limited weapons and equipment, our army still took the initiative to attack, daring to confront the enemy's fortified positions. This is a clear manifestation of the indomitable will, the spirit of overcoming difficulties, and the desire for independence and freedom.
