Phja Khao Temple – A Spiritual Anchor Amidst The Mountains And Forests Of Cho Don.
Located in the majestic mountainous area of Bản Thi town, Chợ Đồn district, Bắc Kạn province, Phja Khao Temple (also known as Mother Phja Khao Temple) has long been a familiar spiritual destination for local people and visitors from afar. Not only is it a place to express faith and wish for peace and prosperity, but the temple also embodies the historical and cultural values of the Chợ Đồn region.

Hidden at the foot of the Phja Khao mountain range, shrouded in clouds year-round, the temple exudes a serene and sacred beauty amidst the vastness of Việt Bắc. Every early spring, on the full moon or the first day of the lunar month, people from all over come here to offer incense, pray for health, luck, and peace for their families.
Phja Khao Temple is dedicated to Saint Trần – the national hero Trần Hưng Đạo, who led the Đại Việt army and people to defeat the Mongol invaders three times in the 13th century, maintaining the independence and sovereignty of the nation. The image of Saint Trần is revered by the people as a symbol of patriotism, resilience, and the spirit of defending the homeland.
In addition, the temple also commemorates the miners who were killed by French colonists during the mineral exploitation period in the Phja Khao area. This commemoration not only expresses gratitude to those who sacrificed their lives but also contributes to educating the tradition of patriotism, the spirit of struggle, and gratitude towards previous generations.
Although the temple's space is not overly grand, it always creates a sense of solemnity and intimacy. Surrounded by lush green mountains and forests, the atmosphere is fresh and peaceful. From the temple area, visitors can clearly feel the beauty of the Chợ Đồn region with its continuous mountain ranges stretching to the horizon.

In 2017, Phja Khao Temple was recognized as a provincial historical and cultural relic. This acknowledgment reflects the special historical, cultural, and spiritual values that the temple has preserved through many generations.
Today, Phja Khao Temple is not only a place for the local people’s spiritual activities but also a meaningful stop in the journey of exploring Chợ Đồn tourism. Here, visitors can not only offer incense and pay their respects but also have the opportunity to learn more about the history of the mining region, the heroic stories of the nation, and enjoy the peaceful beauty amidst the forests of Bắc Kạn.
