Quảng Trị - Việt Nam

There is a "steel fortress" in Quang Tri that, even now standing amidst the windy hills, still evokes the atmosphere of the battlefield from years ago: Camp Carroll.

Many people pass through the Cam Lộ – Khe Sanh route without knowing that among those peaceful hills once existed one of the largest and fiercest artillery bases on the Quảng Trị battlefield.

Camp Carroll, also known as Tân Lâm base, is located on Hill 241. In the past, this place was considered a “fire shield” on Route 9 — a critically important position to control the western area of Quảng Trị.

What makes Camp Carroll special lies not only in its history… but in the feeling of actually standing there.

The road leading up to the base is quite open, surrounded by hills and strong winds. The space is so peaceful that it’s hard to believe this was once the site of intense shelling during the fiery summer of 1972.

In the past, this base had a massive artillery system, with ammunition depots deep within the hills and many layers of solid fortifications surrounding it. It was once a crucial military link on the Đông Hà – Khe Sanh route and a place where the enemy concentrated heavy firepower to control the battlefield in the DMZ area.

Few people know that the collapse of Camp Carroll once created a significant turning point in the military situation in Quảng Trị at that time.

But the most memorable thing about coming here is the strange contrast between the past and the present.

No more sounds of bombs or smoke and fire. Now there are only green hills, a wide sky, and a silent victory monument amidst the wind. There are moments when standing and looking around, everything seems to slow down significantly.

Many people who come to Camp Carroll often light an incense stick and sit quietly for a few minutes. It’s not the kind of crowded check-in spot, but it’s a place that makes people think for quite a while after leaving.

If you enjoy exploring places with both historical depth and a sense of “you only understand after you go,” Camp Carroll is definitely a place worth visiting when coming to Quảng Trị.
