Little do people know that behind the shimmering, juicy oranges of the Cam Ly Mộc Châu garden lies a story full of love and coincidence, starting more than 10 years ago.

From an orange for a pregnant wife

The Navel orange variety originates from Brazil and has since been widely cultivated in many countries such as the USA, Australia... This variety is famous for its deep yellow flesh, crunchy segments, naturally sweet flavor, almost seedless, and a lingering aroma long after tasting.

About 10 years ago, when the family still lived in a small house in the garden in Mộc Châu, the sister – mother of baby Ly – was in the early months of her pregnancy. Although life was still quite difficult at that time, Chiến decided to buy some imported Navel oranges to nourish his wife.

Seeing his wife delighted by the special flavor of this orange, he suddenly had a bold idea: Could this variety be grafted onto the orange tree growing in the garden?

A bold idea and an unexpected outcome

Keeping the stem of the leftover orange with some grafting buds, Chiến began experimenting right on the orange roots in his garden.

Without a laboratory or proper research conditions, everything stemmed from curiosity and the desire to create a delicious orange variety for the family.

Three years later, a miracle happened.

The grafts grew strong and began to bear the first fruit. The oranges exhibited all the characteristics of the imported Navel variety: thin skin, shimmering yellow flesh, crunchy segments, rich sweetness, long-lasting aroma, and almost seedless.

At that time, baby Ly – the daughter whose mother was pregnant when the story began – had just turned 3 years old.

From a few orange roots to a 3-hectare garden

Noticing that the new orange variety adapted very well to the climate and soil of Mộc Châu, Chiến continued to propagate using the grafting method.

From the first few orange trees in the corner of the garden, the planting area gradually expanded into a garden of about 3 hectares as it is today.

Not stopping there, this Navel orange variety has also been propagated to many other gardens in the Mộc Châu area as well as many provinces and cities across the country.

According to the family's sharing, many expert delegations from the Fruit Tree Research Institute and specialized units have also come to visit, take grafts for research, evaluation, and propagation.

Why is it called Cam Ly?

The family named the garden Cam Ly, after their first daughter.

It is not just a name associated with the time the first orange variety took root in Mộc Châu, but also preserves memories of a journey that began with love for the wife and the unborn child.

Each orange season, the rows of fruit-laden trees remind us of that spontaneous decision years ago – a decision that created one of the first successfully propagated Navel orange gardens in Sơn La.
