Located in Nguyễn Trãi Ward, Hà Giang City, the museum was built with a total area of nearly 1,000m². The building has an impressive design, resembling a lotus flower rising in the heart of the city – a symbol of purity, resilience, and the vitality of the borderland. The exhibition space is arranged scientifically and modernly while still maintaining a solemn and close-knit atmosphere.

The prehistoric and early historic exhibition section makes a strong impression with a collection of stone tools dating from 4,000 to 30,000 years. These original artifacts are clear evidence that Hà Giang was once inhabited by primitive people very early on. In addition, the collection of ancient bronze drums dating back about 2,000 – 2,500 years with diverse shapes further affirms the role of this land in the Đông Sơn cultural process and national history.

The imprint of the feudal period is also recreated through artifacts and documents related to ancient religious and belief structures such as Bình Lâm Pagoda and Sùng Khánh Pagoda. Notably, the collection of ceramic artifacts from the Trần Dynasty (13th – 14th centuries) excavated at the Nậm Dầu archaeological site (Vị Xuyên District) holds high historical and archaeological value, showing the brilliant cultural and religious development of this land in the past.

The space about the history of the struggle to protect the Fatherland from the late 19th century to the present reflects the indomitable spirit of the military and people of Hà Giang through resistance wars against foreign invaders and border protection. Original artifacts, documentary images, and real stories help viewers feel more deeply about the sacrifices and resilient will of the border residents.
One of the highlights of the museum is the exhibition area showcasing the culture of 14 ethnic groups with a long history of cohabitation in Hà Giang, such as Nùng, Giáy, La Chí, Hoa, Pà Thẻn, Cờ Lao, Lô Lô, Bố Y, Phù Lá, Pu Péo… In addition, there is an in-depth introduction to the four ethnic groups with large populations, including Mông, Tày, Dao, and Kinh. Through traditional costumes, musical instruments, household items, and housing models, the colorful cultural picture of Hà Giang vividly comes to life.

At the end of 2020, the museum was comprehensively upgraded and renovated, becoming a modern tourist destination while still retaining its unique identity. The new space includes a ceremonial hall and five themed exhibition areas: Hà Giang residents through history, protecting the Fatherland and border security, diverse cultures, three characteristic ecological regions, and the construction of a new life.
Visiting Hà Giang Provincial Museum, tourists not only simply sightsee but also embark on a journey back in time. From ancient prehistoric traces to the contemporary life on the border, every story is told through artifacts, images, and realistic exhibition spaces.
