The story goes that once upon a time, there was a poor but kind-hearted woodcutter who, while going into the forest to chop wood, saved a small deer from a hunter.

To repay the favor, the small deer revealed to the woodcutter that at night, fairies often came down to the pond to bathe after playing chess on a flat stone nearby. Following the deer's advice, the woodcutter hid by the pond and kept the youngest fairy's outfit, preventing her from flying back to the sky. Afterwards, he gave her a set of human clothes and proposed to marry her.

The two lived together and had children. But later, when the woodcutter showed his wife the old outfit, the fairy tried it on and then flew back to the sky with their children. Since then, the woodcutter has gone to the pond every day hoping to see his wife and children again. From that story, the local people called this place Ao Tien.
